BENEFIT FOR STEVE ADAMS FAMILY! Steve Adams, a Paramedic with Ashe Medics, had a fire at his residence earlier this month (January 2020). There was smoke and structural damage that needs to be repaired. Steve and his family are having to rent a temporary residence as well. There will be a spaghetti dinner at Ashe Medics to benefit Steve and his family that will help with repairs to their home and help cover the costs of a temporary residence. Benefit will be on Saturday, Feb. 1, starting at 5:30 pm, at 716 Mt. Jefferson Rd., West Jefferson, NC.

VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA) will be held at the Alleghany County Library on Wednesdays and Saturdays beginning January 29. Call the Alleghany County Library at 336-372-5573 for more info or to set up your appointment.

ASHE OUTREACH FISH FRY & BLUEGRASS MUSIC is held the first and third Friday of each month, 4-8 pm, at the old Riverview Elementary School, 11719 NC Hwy. 88 W., Creston, NC. $10/plate donation includes fish or chicken, fries, hush puppies, coleslaw, drink and dessert. A CAREGIVER’S SUPPORT GROUP will be held the second Thursday of each month at 4 pm, hosted by Alleghany County Library. FREE COMMUNITY MEAL every Saturday, 11 am-12:00 pm, in the old West Jefferson Elementary School cafeteria. The meal, provided at no cost, is a program of Ashe Outreach Ministries. LIVING FREE’S STEPPING INTO FREEDOM meets on Friday nights at 6:30 pm at Cornerstone Christian Fellowship on Grandview Rd. Sparta, NC. Living Free is a nondenominational, Christ-centered, Bible-based small group for those who desire to be set free of substance abuse, alcoholism, damaging behaviors, abusive relationships and negative emotions. ASHE MEDICATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS provides help for people to get some of their medicines FREE. Medications are ordered directly from the drug companies after financial screening and return of documentation from the doctor. You may apply in person at our office located at 225 Court St. Jefferson, NC. (behind the old courthouse). We are open Mon. thru Thurs. From 7:30 am to 3: pm, and Fridays by appointment. You must live or work in Ashe County. Please bring current income tax form 1040, social security statement, one month’s pay stubs, proof of residence and your prescriptions and/or medication bottles. WORLD VISION, KNIT FOR KIDS. This is a nationwide program for volunteer knitters to fight poverty, together we give hope and warmth to children living in poverty or other difficult situations around the globe. For millions of children, a handmade sweater, blanket or hat is a chance for better health and protection and warmth from freezing temperatures. It’s a symbol of support for a better future. 60 percent of these items are distributed as far away as Armenia, Nicaragua, Swaziland and Tanzania. 40 percent go to destinations as close as Appalachia, New Orleans and the Bronx. Sometimes these items are shipped to an area that experienced a recent natural disaster. You can drop off your items at the SecondHand News Plus office, 101 N. Jefferson Ave., in downtown West Jefferson.

ASHE SERENITY ALANON FAMILY GROUP meets every Wednesday and Friday at noon, for those affected by the drinking of a relative or friend. Located at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 400 Beaver Creek School Rd., West Jefferson, NC. For more info, contact Linda, 828-964-8373.

GUARDIAN AD LITEM ADVOCATES serve as the judge’s eyes and ears on abused and neglected children who have been taken from their homes and are now in foster care. More than 1,500 abused and neglected children in North Carolina go to court without someone to advocate for them. Be a voice for the child and speak up for their best interests. ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS is a fellowship of men & women who share experience, strength & hope, whose primary purpose is to stay sober and help others recover from alcoholism.
